Hi
I'm yet another one stuck at Step 4. I'm running it on my Apache server with PHP & MySQL.
This is the error:
The config file could not be written.
Step 4 out of 5 1 2 3 4 5
Step 4 - Set Back File Permissions
Please make sure the following file permissions are set back correctly:
File / Folder Current Permission Required Permission
includes/global.inc.php n/a n/a Help
Please ensure the file permission are set correctly to continue.
The current and required permission are the same !
I have tried the manual install but no luck, perhaps I've typed the wrong paths ? Help me...My Apache documentroot is c:\www and all the files lie in c:\www\shop\upload

c:\www means it's on your local hard disk drive. Is the location where you intend to install your shop?
The file permission change refers to the ultimate destination of the files, not the original files you are uploading, so you need to reset the file permission to the already uploaded file.

I get the same error at stage 4 - permissions are shown as "n/a" for both.
What should the permissions for the file includes/global.inc.php be? 0644 or 0777?
FileZilla is not allowing me to make the change via properties so I've asked my host to do so, but I'm unsure of what is should be set to....
Thanks
Steve

777 allows the file to be written to, which is necessary for installation. 644 blocks it from being altered after you install which is recommended for security reasons - you don't want hackers to be able to write to your file and mess us your store.

I am also having this problem on windows server. my permissons are already 777. What can i do? iv'e searched so many threads with this problem and the only solutions seeme to be
1. change permissions to 777 - which mine already are
2. delete the install directory - this does not work for me,
3. change to a unix server- which i cannot do, and is not really a solution anyway this should work on windows servers.
There must be a solution to this problem on a windows server. Anyone, please?

Do a search on this forum using Windows 2003 as your search term. The answer is within those results

Did you ever resolve the problem? I was having same problem with being stuck on Step 4. I tried the various solutions given in response to the problem (except deleting everything). Finally, I just backed up in the install process (yes, literally used the BACK button on the browser, ignoring the POSTDATA warning messages) until I got back to Step 1.
I carefully double-checked my database server, username, password info. Everything was okay there. FINALLY, I noticed that at the bottom of the screen where CubeCart had attempted to guess my URL and my server directory (i.e., /home/username/etc), it was INCORRECT! Somehow, the installation had truncated (cut off) part of my username, and messed up the entire server directory.
After carefully and correctly typing in the server path, I went through the rest of the steps again. Step 4 stopped giving me any problem. The installation was completed in just a few minutes.
I've installed CubeCart before on other domains and it has been a breeze. This is the first time I've had any strange issue. (I'm using 3.0.16.) Hope this post helps someone.
Cheers.

That will probably help a lot of people. Quite often, a misplaces capital letter can be enough to help the installation at this stage.

When you run View phpinfo() from Step 3, which of the returned values are the ones you should use on the Step 3 fields?
