We are a small business just setting up a site with cubecart.

Items we hope to sell are of very variable sizes and weights.

Even as large as a car wing panel!

We are struggling to find the best way to automatically calculate postal rates for items.

The volume sent is not that large either.

Some companies seem to invite potential customers to call, but we would like to give the option of ordering online.

Any advice would be welcome.

If you are going to be shipping by weight, it is easy to set up. You need to assign a weight to each item, and then setup a shipping chart to cover those weights. The shipping chart can also include a handling charge, ie the cost of your packaging and time to ship the items.

Shape and size do both figure in for the most part. In the us at least, UPS has a chart saying if it weighs "blank" to "blank" it can be up to "blank" size, then it also lists the charge if something is over this size.

USPS has started measuring sizes with a much higher scrutiny then before, but if you are shipping a car wing I wouldnt use usps anyways, would cost way too much.

An easy way to do this is to figure out the weight of the item and how big it is going to be, then compare it with UPS or fedex's chart of rates, and simply say that item weighs whatever you set up in your by weight shipping to match the cost you need.

I.E. - If you set your by weight shipping up so that 20-25lbs is $30.00, and 25-35lbs is $40.00 and the item only weighs 20lbs, but is going to cost you $38 to ship, simply plug in the weight for that item at 25lbs so it will charge the higher amount.

There might be other ways, but off the top of my head that would be a simple fix.

Otherwise you might check .org for some mod to fit your needs
