Difference between Skins and Templates

I guess I have to learn all over again, I am so use to using cgi web sites where a template is an htm file and it is the whole structures and lay out of the page shown. Thank you -
I really new at this, I have cubecart v6 installed, but that is about as far as it goes. I have a two questions 1. What is the difference between Skins and templates? 2. Can html templates be used by them self?
