  1. Roban is probably right, at least as regards the general public is concerned, that stating the reasons for leaving ebay, at least in the manner you have, are negative. I don't doubt they are true. But there is an affirmative, forward-looking way of saying the same thing that will have better "curb appeal." Having said that, and asking special note be taken that I don't think those comments help you sell CDs, I for one, am asked by potential Cube Cart clients, why they should pay me to customize and host a CubeCart-based site when they can get a site on ebay? I am sufficiently interested in that issue - and I think other CC developers would also be interested - that I'm going to start a thread in a more appropriate corner of these forums. When I do, I'll return here and edit this message by adding a link to it. IF you are so inlined, please go there and share your thoughts. EDIT: let's continue this topic over in General Dsicussion http://www.cubecart.com/site/forums/index....showtopic=26084 As for your web site in general, it's a great job of graphic design. However, I am not a fan of right side menu because I read from left to right. Placing the nav menu on the right annoys me and I have the impression it is there just to be different, while ignoring the inefficiency of it. Also, my own opinion is that any banner higher than 90 pix is a waste of space and gets in the way of showing me the product. When the banner dominates every page it egts tiresome scrolling down to see the contents of the site. But, overall, an excellent job.
  2. Please see this site under construction: First in IE7 http://www.buildinghosting.com/~veces3/store/ Compare the font displayed in the title and contents of the boxes Shop by Category, Shopping Basket, Featured Product and Information with the same fonts in the title and text of the boxes Mailing List and the center column. That's one issue. Now look at the same page in FF. Not only does the same text display in the same font across all those areas, but note that the links in the Information box are underlined, whereas they are not underlined in IE. I'd like the line decorationfor both IE and FF to be "none." That's what is set in style.css. This came about after moving the Site Doc links from the bottom of the page to the Information box. Suggestions on cross-browser uniformity will be appreciated.
  3. Found and removed <u> and </u>, but after uploading edited info.tpl the underlining still exists in FF. Refreshing page does not bring joy. The response is appreciated. More suggestions welcome.
  4. Worked nicely for me. But I still have other cross browser font issues. Please see this thread.
  5. I too was not able to reproduce your problem. I too suspect it is a caching issue. But I did see another display issue that is screen-resolution dependent. I suspect you are using a high res setting on your monitor and that masks the problem so you are not seeing it When viewed in 800 by 600 res, the length of the line Site Docs links causes a left / right scroll. Normally, the Legend skin, which is what you are using, behaves itself at various resolutions, which is why it it is my first choice. To give all users, regardless of screen res, the same experience, you could double the line of links, or use Markcart's mod tutorial to move some or all of the Site Docs into a box. Either method would fix the problem. FWIW, I wish your site had been around whilst I was cycling through a series of disappointing brides. Just showing them the site before the nuptials and noting their reaction - or lack of one - might have been cautionary to the point of prevention.
  6. In reverse order . . . Mark's most recent post in that line height thread (adding a snippet to the end of the style.css) solved the problem. Damn, he's good. FWIW, the reason I could not find it in searching is, I used the search terms "line spacing" and variations on that. So maybe by repeating that search phrase here and repeating it again without quotes as line spacing, it may help someone else's search in the future. As for the font size, it's not something controlled by the browser text settings (which my 74-year-old-this-month eyes often need to use). In the problem at hand, only parts of the CC page are anomalous; and even then, only in IE. Look at the subject site (http://www.buildinghosting.com/~veces3/store/) in IE. You will note that the boxes Sale Items, Mailing List and the center column are all showing a smaller font than the boxes Shop by Category, Shopping Cart and Information on the same page. This issue exists only in IE. Yet, I did not do any editing of those improperly displaying boxes (to my knowledge). And, I'm still stuck on the issue that the Information box links are underlined and mis-aligned for FF but behave themselves in IE. Anyone?
  7. Yes, I know the addresses can be downloaded. The issue is uploading a delimited file *to* CC> I suspect you are right about a column marking subs as such because the Db contains at least 2 fields named email, in different tables. Still hoping for info on how to get the names into the Db. Anyone??
  8. I'm building a CC to replace a brochure site that accumulated a substantial and valuable list of newsletter subcribers. The owner wants to import them into the CC Db but I can't see a field in MySql where they are stored. Anyone know?
  9. see this site under construction: http://69.93.140.122/~veces3/store EDIT NOTE - noted and fixed IP typo about six hours later. in MS/IE, the general texts are displaying a full size too small in most places in FF, those same texts are displaying the correct size uniformly in all places but the links in the revised Information box are underlined even though the HTML does not contain underlining code. The above happened as soon as I followed the excellent tutorial in Mark's box mod PDF to move the Site Docs into the original Information box. I can't figure out what I must have inadvertently edited that affects so many texts. Finally, there is a pure cross-browser issue that is not related to the above. In all boxes, bulleted lists that are a nice compact single space line in FF require what seems to be 2 lines, or at least 1.5, when displayed in MS/IE. Is there some way of making the line spacing behave in both browsers? TIA
  10. Boy, it sure looks suspiciously like someone has simply written a slightly changed skin ans is claiming it as a proprietary product. http://demo.cs-cart.com/ And for a very fat price, too.
  11. With sincere respect, and with no offense intended, there an old joke about a child who comes home from KinderGarten one day and asks, "Mommy, where did I come from?" Mom has been ready for this intimate moment. She has studied highly recommended books about building trust through integrity and candor. She tells her little girl about the beauty and sacredness of the gift of life. About the love of mommies and daddies. When she's finished 30 intense and fact-filled minutes later, everything has been fully explained in carefully clinical detail. But, seeing a strange look on her little girl's face, she ends up with, "Now sweetheart, do you have any questions?" "No, Mommy. But my new best friend in school is going to be surprised. She said today that she comes from Philadelphia and she wanted to know where I came from. I can't wait to tell her. '" Moral: when asked a simple question, consider that a simple answer would be best. If your hosting company offers a control panel that included Fantastico, CubeCart is already installed on the server. All you need do is activate it, do some customizing and add products. Simple. CubeCart is a totally self-contained Shopping Cart program written in PHP code and using a database called MySQL. The code defines the pages. The database manages the products and the ordering process all the way to checking out and paying with a credit card or PayPal. This web site has some excellent video tutorials that supplement the written docs on how to install and customize CubeCart. Just look above, click on the word "Support." The videos and docs are there. You can use a regular web site, created in DreamWeaver or FrontPage or plain old hand-coded HTML, as portal pages - or you can install CubeCart all by itself, without Dreamweaver or anything else as a "front end." When you do that, the customer goes directly to your store, without delay. Again, simple.
  12. simple cause, merely slightly complex cure. This once happened to me as a reult of moving my database around and resinstalling it. In the process, certain cells in the database were corrpted in the form of a repetition. Best way to fix it is to open your Db using PHPadmin. Look for the Prodct Index file. When you look in it, you'll see that some items items have been replicated. For example, an item whose product id is 3 will have two such entries. When you ask the store to show you its products, it shows you that #3 item twice. If you reomve one from the Db file, it will then show as one., all is OK again. Joe
  13. May we see it, too? Much easier to figure it out that way. What's the URL of the page?
  14. That's a clue worth attending. I suspect that the cPanel installation system does not like the word "test" for a directory. Try something many people use such as "store." Alternatively, you can download the program, use FTP to upload all the files that are in the folder "upload." (NOT the folder itself, just the files in it.) There is a read me file in the download. Also, click right now above you the word "Support" and then on the Tutorials. Good luck!
  15. It will take hours that way - get yourself an FTP program. I use "WS_FTP Home" from www.ipswitch.com. There are many others.. some free. Just Google "FTP."
  16. When I posted the brief tutorial on how to install a demo CubeCart (and any other programs like it) onto a thmb drive (or any similar device including a laptop) at: http://www.cubecart.com/site/forums/index....showtopic=10592 I wasn't tihnking far enough ahead. At the time I had not yet created a real CC so the concept of installing a demo was limited to a start from scratch, a new installation which also involves a new dtatabase. Now that I have 5 stores and expect to have a few more shortly - and now that I'm packing for a 6 week trip to parts of the world where I may not have Internet access - I want to be able to demo a few o my actual stores. But now the challenge is how to grab a copy of a fully populated Db for an existing store and associate it with a downloaded copy of the store that I've installed on the laptop? Suggestions? Someone have a tutoral for that? Want to create one?
  17. Please see the sad status of www.tiffanytravelonline.com/store What I'm trying to do is use the portion of the Killer skin that controls boxes in Legend so I can cause the boxes to look like suitcases. Up to the point you can see, I'm OK, but I'm stuck at this point, with the result you see. The layout.css is below 1) The boxes are snugged left even though I have set padding that is not being applied. 2) the graphic boxFootBg.gif is not displaying even though it is on the server in the same folder with boxTitleBg.gif which is displaying. I've fiddled with top and bottom padding and top/botttom margins - even to the point of excess, but it doesn't show. Yet, it is there: http://www.tiffanytravelonline.com/store/s...s/boxFootBg.gif 3) I can't set vertical padding of 5px between the boxes. Nothing I've tried is working so it suggests I'm not trying the right thing in the right place. 4) then of course, there's the biggie - the way the page breaks at the center column. I tried changing box widths, column widths, moving the shopping cart and sale items to the left side, even though I want a three column page - and so on, but I can't move it. Obviously I've got a lot to learn about layout.css. Here's the relevant section of it at the moment. QUOTE } .boxTitleLeft, .boxTitleRight { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 70%; background-image: url(../styleImages/backgrounds/boxTitleBg.gif); width: 160px; height: 10px; padding-top: 10px; padding-left: 10px; background-repeat: no-repeat; font-weight: bold; } .boxFootLeft, .boxFootRight { background-image: url(../styleImages/backgrounds/boxFootBg.gif); width: 160px; height: 40px; padding-left: 10px; background-repeat: no-repeat; margin-bottom: 10px; } .boxContentLeft, .boxContentRight { border-left: 4px solid #A8A7A7; border-right: 4px solid #A8A7A7; background-color: #FFFFea; padding-left: 5px; padding-top: 9px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 147px; } .boxContent { border-top: 3px solid #CFE3F5; border-right: 1px solid #ffffea; border-bottom: 1px solid #ffffea; border-left: 1px solid #ffffea; padding: 3px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 75%; color: #333333; margin-bottom: 40px; } .colMid { position: relative; width: 398px; float: left; } .colRight { position: relative; width: 160px; padding-left: 5px; right: 9px; float: right; } .boxContent { border-top: 1px solid #A8B4B0; border-right: 1px solid #5E85CF; border-bottom: 1px solid #5E85CF; border-left: 1px solid #5E85CF; padding: 3px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 75%; color: #333333; background-color: #FFFFFF; margin-bottom: 5px; } END QUOTE
  18. Please see the screenshot of the the boxes in a Legend skin I'm working on. I'd like to get rid of the space defined by the red arrow, which I'm pretty sure will also eliminate the repeat of the image. After I get that right and after I rework the image height so there's more room for the box title text, I'll be tweaking the rounded corners from the Killer skin so each box resembles a suitcase for this travel agency. Advice on where is the setting that will fix the space problem will be a great start and sincerely appreciated.
  19. Actually, times 3 is the formula I use. To those starting out, stop worrying if your price is low enough. That's not what wins projects worth having. Also, accept the fact that there are many more wannabe online store owners than there are those who know what they need - not just what they think they want, why they need it and are willing to pay for professional service that knows how to do it. Most important question of all - ask if they have money to spend. If they waffle on the response, you probably are wasting their time and yours. Long before you float an estimated price, ask your prospect many, many questions. Go look around on the net and you will find developers who have been kind enough to share those questions. There's a pretty good book, worth the money the first time you want to make a profit from a job, not just win the contract, at http://www.sitepoint.com/books/ and scroll to The Web Design Business Kit. I don't agree with everything he suggests, but then Bill Gates totally ignored me when I tried to talk sense to him, too. Stupid kid. There's another book there on SitePoint - "Deliver First Class Web Sites: 101 Essential Checklists" - I haven't read it but now that I see it again, I'm going to buy it today. I'll post my review here after I read it.
  20. Good choices all . . . the speed and quality of support in these forums is a prime issue in the value of CC. No software is perfect; no user knows everything. But the moderators and the contributors bridge the gap.
  21. You mean we still have to kick back the usual 90%?
  22. Have you read my tutorial on installing CC on a thumb drive (which is the same as putting it on your desktop)? My tutorial is so step-by-step and simple that even I understand it. See above on how to find it.
  23. That's a great question. I'd love to see it done. I think I could sell more CC projects if I had that to offer, for the appropriate price, as well.
  24. I'm in complete agreement with both Sir William and Everything Web and Vrakas. Your calculation of expected time must be complete and then multiplied because the reality is, no project - read my lips - NO project ever is completed in the number of hours that you calculate based on simply the work itself. You will expend at least as much time dealing with a client's second-thoughts and delays as you will on the actual work - and that time is your money. You will spend hours chasing the client for material and approvals. I would not do a 1,000 store project for less than $2,000 US and then ONLY on the condition that the client fills out a spreadsheet such as Sir William's or the less-feature rich freebie or some similar tool - both available over at the ORG forums. I would not do it unless the client agreed to provide the images to a uniform spec such as width, plus having been optimized for the web by something like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Image Ready. That failing, the client should be charged for image preparation. Even so, with all that, I require a non-refundable downpayment up-front, of 50% of the expected price and 100% of the first year of hosting before starting. I've also learned the hard way that you must have a provision in your agreement that if your client delays more than 30 days in providing the materials described in the agreement or in approval of work submitted during development, then the entire balance is due and owing, with the stipulation that you will finish the job, but only after that balance has been paid. I don't think that in the past 12 years I have ever built a web site where the client came forward with the materials when promised. The suggested clause gets you paid. If a client balks at ithat provision, be warned that you will be burned. Hope that helps
  25. No, you are not missing something - in fact you've picked up on something that I never noticed and neither has any one else. It certainly is irregular. When the Buy button is clicked, you not only are taken to the same page as if you had clicked More, but nothing is put in the shopping cart. I'll have to post a question in a tech support forum. Good catch. Thanks
