As Deborah Kerr said to John while seducing him -

In the film "Tea and Sympathy" the abused wife of a bullying headmaster seduces an early teenaged student whom her husband has publicly humiliated and called a "sissy boy" because he refuses to play football. Her seduction restores the boy's shattered sense of manhood and gets even with her nasty husband.

Before pulling him into bed, she cautionsthe boy, "Some day, when you speak of this to others . . . and you will . . . be kind."

With that advice in mind - but without either tea or sympathy or anything else - please look at my first CC. There are products to be added but the look and feel has been accepted by the client, so I think my design work is done.

Okay I'll try to be as kind as possible. :w00t:

The product images are great! And used nicely throughout the site.

But I think you have too many colors go on here; you have purple, gold, blue, red, black, green, white, and orange. Pick two or three and use them on everything from text color, roll over colors, buttons, borders, and background colors. I personally would stick with the purple, gold, white combination. The logo is a bit amateurish.

Very nice index page though!

You have a good start there, you're on your way to a lovely store and I wish you much success.

Speaking in terms od SEO I would change your title to include some of your keywords. Since the title is what is read by spiders first, yours as it is now, does not give a a clue as to what your store is about. You'll have to get words in there like: jewelry and jewelry stands to have any chance of success.

Looks good, but what would make it better would be to remove the borders from the pictures. Not your images, but the <img tags themselves. Since your images have their own borders, the img borders look funky. You might also dump the text underlines on the links. That would really make the page look cleaner. :w00t:

You have 6 category images on the index page, with captions.

# of the categories have the image and the caption hyperlinked.........3 have just the iamge hyperlinked.

Whats up with that?

The box header text, being white, is a little difficult to read on the gold background.

I think the black background overpowers the other colors, and clashes to a degree.

Thanks for the comments - and my manhood is still safe.

Jen, I agree that color harmony would be nice but the many colors are the unavoidable consequence of the various and colorful products. As it is, the pages do have a color theme based on purple and orange. (That's what the client wants; I can't argue with that.)

What appears to be gold in the box title bars is supposed to be the same shade of orange as the logo but I'm having a problem with it because the client also wants the 3-d effect that the graduated title bar uses. I've been tweaking it offline and waiting for client approval. When the darker color is acheived, the reverse color text will be required for legibility.

Sir William,

I agree about the links around the graphics. But that raises a problem, too. I want to remove those but not remove the blue underlining of the text links. Can't see how to remove the former without also removing the latter - and I think that the blue, underlined text links are needed. Otherwise, a user would learn that the texts are links only by accident - and neither the client nor I want to count on that. The graphics being links is a more likely accidental discovery.

Do you know of any way to remove the link color box from the graphics while leaving the text decoration?

Good point about the page title but SEO page ranking, especially in Google which accounts for some 90% of searches, now is less about page titles or keywords or metatags and more about links and popularity. The client intends an aggressive online marketing, using Google Adwords, to draw traffic, As part of the hosting package, she gets six different web traffic analysis tools, including Urchin (now owned by Google) which does an excellent job of monitoring promotional efforts.

Phantom Menace

Ahhh - you caught me not finishing the links. There are also two more grahics coming to fill in the third row. I'm waiting for the client OK of the layout before doing the finishing work. I am expecting that the client will want some changes. So I did just enough to show her the layout - and will finish after she has her final say.

Again, thanks to all for incisive and intelligent comments. They will come in handy. I'm starting another store project in a few days, just before I leave for a month in Australia and a week in Malaysia. I'll be working off my laptop most of way and may even start a thrird CC store in late November. The learning curve for CC was steeper than I'd expected but worth the climb.

Joe, simply add a border="0" to the image calls.

As for readability of the box titles, simply use bold there. Easily adjustable in the Style Sheet.

Oh, and I think you'll have more people clicking the pics than the words. Just simple psychology. They click what they want...and what they want is pictured. The brain will interpret the picture before it reads and comprehends the words.

In response to the above advice, I've done some tweaking. I like the changes that were suggested. Those I've implimented greatly improve the look.

There's some interesting cross browser stuff going on . . .

The ALT text does not display in FireFox. Only on IE. Dopesnyone know of a way to force it Firefox?

Look at the home page in each of those browsers and note that in Firefox, the shop by Category box list displays nicely without spacing between the lines of the list. But in IE it has what I consider an un-needed space. I think I can tweak that in the CSS. But if anyone else is aware of the exact place, let me know?

Again, thanks for all the feedback.

use <.... title=\"SOME TITLE\"> for firefox you can use both like eg:

<img src=\"images/mypc.jpg\" alt=\"My Pic\" title=\"My Pic\">

Thanks for that tip on using CSS to eliminate image boarders. You are correct, I've already implemented a tip from Sir William involving editing the image tags in the HTML to include a border="0" to the image calls. It too cleans them up. But I'll keep yours in mind the next time because the CSS is a more elegant approach and will be useful as long as the use of it needs to be applied site-wide.

The site looks much beter thanks to the feedback here.
