the install manual suggests a linux/unix hosting - isn't that also necessary for php? (i don't think php would run on win servers)

Well,

I do have php running on the machine in question.

It's a WindowsXP machine with MySQL, PHP, Perl and Coldfusion.

But I don't know if CubeCart will work on a Windows Box

As long as you have the latest versions PHP and MySQL running and either Linux or Windows OS at least.. then theres no reason why it can't run.

I installed a local copy on my computer which is XP Home. I do all my testing and modifications on it before uploading to my real store.
