A full copy Cubecart for localhost

Hi all,

I have a web designing and eCopmerce company that recommends Cubecart as one of its products to our customers, however it is becoming more and more frustrating that when we are asked to modify the Cubecart product there are certain applications we cannot access unless we have a license. We don't want to use the customers site for research and development of their site as this is live and their customers don't want to be bothered with half working online stores. So is there a way that we can have a full localhost site that is registered to us without having to buy a new license for ourselves everthing time we get a new client. We have a localhost for every new client and at the moment we use the demo version this is OK for some but we are finding increasing differcult to work this way when we have go to applications that can only be seen if you have a full license.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Regards

Peterp

As the consultant, I am responsible to acquire all the tools I need to do my consulting work -- I cannot expect my clients to provide me with the tools I need. I also cannot expect the tool manufacturer to give me the tools I need -- although it would be nice -- including software from the software publishers.

One solution that comes to mind, and I do this myself, my toolset includes a separate computer which has the function of DNS server, web server, database server, and anything else I need it to do. (Since I am not fluent in Linux, my server box is based on Windows.)

I can do my development work on my local workstation from a "working copy" checked out from a version control system's repository on the server. (If your development protocols do not include version control, you are missing out on a great gift to the developer world.) I commit changes and then update the working copy on the web server.

If a separate server is not feasible, Devellion has said they will assign 'localhost' (I prefer 127.0.0.1) to your license, if asked.

Your workstation can have a small web server installed, I prefer Hiawatha.

I have to say that I 100% agree with Brian. We do want to make life as easy for you and I am sure we can add some development URL's to your license.

For example we can add:

dev1.example.com

dev2.example.com

dev3.example.com

This will give you a  few development URL's. PLease submit a sales ticket with your key and required development URL's and we can do this for you.

Also completely agree with replies above - you do need to invest something (whether time and / or money) in your business environment. That being said, Al is always very helpful with licencing sub domains for development purposes when you have you own licence and you can also have unlimited installations in sub directories anyway as long as these are not used for commercial live sites as per the licencing. It sounds from your post that you dont even have a single licence of your own and if that is the case then neither solution is open to you - Investing in at least one licence isnt too expensive.

I would not recommend Brian's solution of Windows based hosting though - it seems to work for him but unless you really know that type of environment, it is a lot more work but more importantly you cannot replicate the hosting environments that you will be deploying to, which will almost certainly be Linux. You can either have one hosting account for a site that your CubeCart is licenced to that you use for development or look at a reseller hosting package that will allow you to host your own and your clients sites - we have recently started offering Reseller Hosting so if you have any questions, please feel free to ask

Thanks

Ian

Hi all,

Thankyou for all of your comments, I was not looking for any free software from anybody I was under the impression wrongly or rightly not sure, that it is one licence 1 user, from everybodies comments I can setup a localhost (127.0.0.1) for each client using my individual licence key. That is I could have 1 client with a address = http://localhost/company1/shop and a 2nd client with the address = http://localhost/company2/shop etc using the same licence key all on the same PC (we use windows) is this correct or do I have it wrong again? The individual clients will have their own licence keys and will have live sites using their individual servers. I do not want to have a hosting capability myself as there are specialised companies that I can use that have the necessary expertise and are better at it than I would be.

Once again thanks for the feedback very much appreciated

Best Regards,

Peterp
