Meta Descriptions

I'm working on putting the meta title/description/keywords into the databases for my pages. However in the admin section under store settings > search engine, there is meta information. Which page does this information show for? The main page or every page on the site?

Also, there is an option below it for Global Meta Data Behaviour with disable/merge/replace. What does this mean?

Thank! :D

The meta information entered in Store Settings, Search Engines tab is available globally - to all pages.

The specific meta data for Product, Category, and Documents will be used:

Replace: global meta data will not be used

Merge: global meta data will be included with the specific meta data

Disabled: global meta data will be used exclusively

The selector is for the behavior of the specific meta data you are entering for the products, categories, and documents.

Dont bother wasting your time with meta keywords as these have not been used by any of the search engines for many years. However getting UNIQUE and highly relevant title meta tags and descriptions is massively important.

Replace: global meta data will not be used

This is by far the best (really the ONLY logical) choice but means you have to enter title and descriptions against every dicument, category and product. BUT if you hope to have any sort of reasonable Search Engine placement then this is by far the best way of achieving it

Merge: global meta data will be included with the specific meta data

As the title and description tags are severely limited to the number of characters that are used, there is almost no occasion when using this is a good idea. In fact, scrub that - there is NO good reason to ever use this option either !

Disabled: global meta data will be used exclusively

This should NEVER be considered as will result in duplicate title and description meta information on all pages which as well as not targetting each page is a massive no no for Google and other search engines.
