Can someone help? Not sure but I had a similar issue, under admin went in to Currencies and amended the Symbol in that screen for Euro and GBP, now it works a treat. Did you have a 'self' install or did you use fantastico? Maybe that's where there is an issue with the character set as these are special characters.
