I have designed a 3 column layout based on the Classic default. It was going ok until I realised i could not modify the checkout style. I cannot find anyway to modify this. The picture below shows the style of the shopfront. As you can see i have managed to get the 3 coloumn layout ok. But you will see from the second pict that the left and mid coloumn are blnank and there doesn't seem to be any coloumn on the right.
