Payment Gateway Error? Customer Received Error

I received a complaint from a customer today saying that her order got a failure:

Error: No payment gateway variable is set!

However, I called (because I did indeed receive the order) and verified the whole order, everything was right. The payment method was "stored card".

What is this error indicative of? on what page could the customer get this error?
