  1. There is a step in the 3.08 to 3.09 saying to exclude upload of language/*/home.inc.php (If you have made changes.) I need more detail. What's the * ? Is it the old DOS wildcard? I'm guessing it means "whatever language you've installed" but I have such bad luck with guesses. And if I have made changes to the anything else in the lang flder, what do I do, or not do? It's 5am here in NYC and I am at my most stupid at that hour, so (to quote from an old movie) "If you speak of this to others, and some day you will, be kind." A free Get Out of Jail card top will be awared to the first person who can identify that movie. (N.B.: The card is not valid for use by any member of the current US Administration above the rank of dog-catcher.)
  2. In Admin CP > Store Config > Currencies do you have a green square next the AU$? In other words, have you enabled AU$? From your message I'm not sure what you've done so I have to ask that basic question. If you have already done that but the problem exists, then I'd say again, put in a ticket.
  3. First the license issue . . . Open a Suport Ticket, explain what you did and include the information from your purchase receipt. They will reactivate the key so you can use it again. Now as to the currency issue, I suspect you are right in believing that you do not have AU$ set as your default curency. That's done in your Admin Control Panel. Look around in there and you'll see a place where you can set the default currency. Don't be discouraged. Many of the problems you'll encounter at the start arise from the rich feature set and the many possibilities. Were this a less powerful and flexible program you'd not need to know so much. But you'll find good support here from the community.
  4. heh-heh - so far, no one seems to have noticed that in my version of the lang file, I changed the field label, "Title" to "Honorarium." I am disappointed at the lost opportunity to be pedantic (no relation to "pedo" as it is commonly used). Abbreviations such as Mr, Mrs, Ms, Dr, Prof, and such that appear ahead of a name are often mistakenly called "title." A title is not what comes before a name; it's what comes after. The formality ahead of a name is the "honorarium" (usually abbreviated as "hon.") An example of "title" alone when someone is signing a document might be: Sam Jones, Phd and the complete form of address when writing *to* him would include both his honorarium and his title, Dr. Sam Jones, Phd. A US Congressman or Senator (when not being called things that might not pass the bad-word filter) would be addressed in a letter or subpoena or Grand Jury Indictment as: Honorable Mary Jones, Representative (district) While I have this opportunity to be boring, let's cover another element that is frequently mis-named. "Salutation" is also not Mr, Mrs, etc. A salutation is the pseudo-affectionate greeting such as, "Dear Mr. I-don't-really-know-you-but-I'm-calling-you-dear." I'm sure there are those of you who will be less than appreciative of this unsolicited advice. I would remind you that this material *will be* on the final for grade - and the Grammar and Syntax Police have been alerted to be alert. class dismissed.
  5. You'll probably discover that those tools you mentioned will not be used often when working in CC. But you will want, at least, an image editor like Photoshop and an editor that can be configured to handle CSS, TPL and PHP. You'll find an excellent tool for those (PHPdesigner) at www.mpsoftware.org. You also will want a robust FTP program. I use WS_FTP from Ipswitch (ww.ipswitch.com). Some here prefer SmartFTP (www.smartftp.com). SmartFTP is free (but eventually has a nag screen), and after 30 days, the free trial for WS_FTP stops orking. But I paid to activate WS_FTP because, for me at least, I found it more robust and less prone to dropped connections. You'll find little discussion here of certain other tools I think are important. Like you, I create and host web sites. My service offers clients access to Urchin, Webalizer, Awstats, etc. because I don't see how you can run any web site, especially an online store, without first-class traffic analysis. Welcome to the CC community. You'll find great help here from some really excellent CubeCart programmers and modders. (OK, I said it like you told me. Can I have my pants back now?)
  6. I need to change the order in which the UPS shipping choices are offered with the cheapest (ground) as the defult. I've forgotten where I did that in another store and need to do it soon, leaving no time to fool with it? Help, please from anyone who knows? TIA
  7. I understand that I am not doing anything improper by replacing the CC logo at the top of the admin menu with my own. The store is a licensed one. I'd like to finish that off by changing the link from the CC URL to one of my own. Also, I'd like to edit the browser title page to put my own business name there. This is in the Legend skin. Does someone know where those two things can be edited? TIA
  8. BTW - I used free PHPdesigner to edit the file. It does a great job of color coding various elements so you can see what's what. See www.mpsoftware.org for free download. Great product. I used to use Editplus but this is superior. tanks for the compliments. Yes, Joe is the real name. When I am not off in the Caribbean where I have many small hotels as hosting clients or in Australia or Chicago or Washington DC visiting children and grandchildren, I am here in Jersey City, NJ, directly across the river from the World Trade Center and a fabulous view of the Manhattan skyline. CC is the best. I now have 3 carts almost ready for prime time and another recently started construction.
  9. George Bernard Shaw once said that England and America are two countries separated by one language. Aside from using different words for the same thing (pram for baby carriage, lift for elevator, etc.) differences in spelling are all over the place (colour versus color, etc.). Then there are differences in style and usage. England tends to politeness that can be perceived as affectation; America to a directness that borders on bluntness. Neither negatives are intended, but the truth is, each may see the other's usage in less than best light. Add to that the fact that, precocious grade-school-aged computer programmers were often creating shopping carts while some of us less intelligent types were studying sentence structure for clarity and learning grammar for precision. Mark, your tutorial is excellent - and the comments of others here to whom I bow in sincere respect - are excellent - as far as they go. But they do not address the issues of spelling, grammar, punctuation and style as this humble non-programmer sees it. An Americanized language file may be of use to those who want to just replace the default English version (and my apologies to Brooky and Sir Williams whose texts are thus edited. No criticism or offence is intended.) I am attaching a file here that I call "amer.lang.inc.php". If someone wishes to substitute it for the default, it should be renamed "lang.inc.php" before it will be effective. USAGE CAUTION: not only have I Americanized spellings, I have liberally changed entire phrases and sentences such as (but not limited to): 1) the "session has been destroyed" and its related messages now refer to logging out. That should put an end to frantic emails from frightened customers. 2) when "login" is used a verb, it is presented in the edited lang file as "log in." It remains "login" as a noun. 3) word order of some awkward constructions has been changed. For example, messages that begin "Below you may edit the list, etc." has been reversed to more readable "The list of names you may edit is below." 4) redundancies have been cleaned out. For example, when a sentence says "is currently" the word "currently" has been removed because "currently" is implicit in "is." To say both is redundant without adding useful information. 5) The USA has "counties" in all states except Louisiana, which for historical reasons calls them "parishes." However, a county is never required for postal or parcel service. The file now uses simply, "state". Also, while we do occasionally use terms such as "town" and "village" (etc.) the universally accepted format for addresses uses only the word "city." Likewise, we call the postal code a "zip." All references in the lang file have been edited to reflect those realities. 6) I've removed all the synthetic emotions indicators such as, "Please" and "Thank you" and "Sorry". Users are dealing with a computer; they know that. To attribute HAL-like responses to a computer ("I'm sorry Dave. I can't do that.") is patently insincere. Even if a user is not conscious of that insincerity, the subliminal remains. Likewise, I changed the phrase, "if you feel . . ." (referring to possible erroneous messages) to the more accurate "If you believe . . . ". People "believe" (or not) facts; they "feel" emotions. 7) I found a few typos that probably originate in late-hour coding sessions fueled by too much sugar and caffeine. Most are in the category of "you" where "your" is intended and where I found a singular noun with a plural verb - or vice versa. 8) other edits are intended to make the displayed statements easier to understand in plain language. For example, there is a tendency in CC - and I've seen it also in Invision Boards and Dragonfly, etc (all PHP files), to misapply punctuation marks. I suspect this arises both from the aforementioned individual emphasis on differing activities at a formative age, as well as the programmer's understandable preference in avoiding punctuation marks that may be parsed as code. Thus, there is a common failure in many PHP lang files to use apostrophes to designate plurality and possession. Also, the period at the end of sentence is often replaced by the less significant comma. Too often, there is confusion over the genuine difference between, "which" and "that". Infinitive splitting instances (with full respect for Churchill's outburst about petty nonsense) have been corrected. For example, "That has already been entered . . . " is more easily understood and more correct grammatically as, "That has been entered already . . . " or even better, when possible, "That has been entered . . . ) - the "already" being redundant of "has been". For those who are confused on those issues, there is a totally pain-free, genuinely funny, little book (by an English author!). Read, "Eats, Shoots and Leaves." I promise you not only will learn everything about grammar and syntax and punctuation you missed back in the sixth or seventh grade, but you also will find yourself laughing out loud. I have used its (note that there is no apostrophe there) principles to edit the CC lang file. To those who object that this is petty stuff, I say that grammar and syntax in ordinary language are just as imporatnt as they are in computer code. In both cases you break the rules at the risk of being misunderstood or the thing not working at all. In sum, caveat lector. But the attached will deliver an Americanized lang file. Hope this helps. amer.lang.inc.php
  10. Yep - that the best way to go. If you look around here, especially in "pinned" topics, you'll find plenty of tips for any problems - and the rest of the support forum will come forward when you ask specific questions. Good luck.
  11. nice quick work. show it to him. I've PM'd you the contact. BTW, that link to 316 is not working. Reaches an error page.
  12. I'll PM you the client email and let you work it out with him.
  13. This is slightly off topic because the the need is not related to CC. A client needs a simple logo based on the initials IBA. The business is network managment and security. He wants to pay between 25 and 50 US$. Anyone interested please PM me and I'll provide the client contact info. If you can suggest a resource, that too would be welcome.
  14. A PHP guide and 3hrs of sleep. Maybe you need more sleep and get real cozy with that guide because that smartass rersponse is not going to win you a lot of friends the next time you post a message asking for help. (Make no mistake - *that* was scolding.)
  15. and . . . the solution is ???? I don't know how to say it without sounding like I'm scolding - which I am not - but if someone poses a problem and solicit help, common practice here in the support forums is, to share the resolution so we can all benefit from it.
  16. You also want to include clear and explicit reference to the rates that will apply to work outside and beyond the scope of the current project. Note I say "reference", by which I mean that you do not list those costs and prices within the contract but refer to some place, perhaps on a web page, where you quote those rates. Also include an arbitration clause. Most lawyers will try to talk you out of this for the simple reason that in the event of a dispute, your costs of resolution via arbitration are a fraction of those for standard litigation. For simple cases, which most are, it's one flat fee, paid up front and no unknown costs down the road. Also, arbitration can often be had complete from start to finish, in less time than it commonly takes to get your first hearing in a lawsuit, even in a small claims court. Arbitration is so simple and transparent a process that most disputes can be resolved without the need for a lawyer. You can get standard, enforceable arbitration language for insertion into your contract from the American Arbitration Association's web site. A page on the AAA web site (http://www.adr.org/sp.asp?id=22020#Arbitration) offers the following suggested language inserted into a contract will create binding arbitration: QUOTE Any controversy or claim arising out of or relating to this contract, or the breach thereof, shall be settled by arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in accordance with its Commercial [or other] Arbitration Rules [including the Optional Rules for Emergency Measures of Protection], and judgment on the award rendered by the arbitrator(s) may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. END QUOTE Do not change a single word of that language unless you have legal expertise. It is what is known in legal circles as "boilerplate." For the benefit of our post-industrial audience, boilerplate is a special type of steel created, tempered, tested and proven to contain high pressure while minimizing explosions. Legal boilerplate has the same qualities, plus a general predictiveness as to how a court will apply it. The same web page goes on to explain why that exact language is used. It is valuable to understand those reasons because your client's lawyer is likely to be the first one to want it removed - to your ultimate detriment. Be prepared to provide the rationale from that web page when that happens. I would be very wary of a potential client who refused to accept arbitration. I started using this clause in my contracts ever since my first successful experience with it to collect commissions from a famous clothing designer in 1975. During 8 years ending in 2004 I was an officer of a labor union of freelance writers and that language was used successfully in the contracts of members. If you fool around in the stock market and other volatile playgrounds, you will find that every broker has such language in their standard contract - and they will flat out refuse to alter it. Good luck . . .
  17. Did you look under Cube Cart 3 > General Support and see the pinned article entitled: "Installing a CC demo store onto a thumb drive" It also applies to installing a test store on a desktop or a notebook. Although it was written for 3.02, everything about it is still valid.
  18. Well if you have already learned DW, you may as well stay with it. But if you want to try an open source HTML WYSWIG editor, take a look at HTML-KIT (http://www.chami.com/html-kit/). Neat app and the home page is packed with good information and links to valuable resources.
  19. I don't know that anywhere is it claimed you can change everything "without the need of a website building software!!." But even it if does, definitions, a bit of good sense need to apply. CC is a PHP / MySQL based production. That does not exclude HTML and other file types such as CSS, JS, JPGs and GIF, etc. as elements withn PHP pages. So you have to learn a little about each of those too. I disagree regarding Dreamweaver. If I can ask that the potential flame war be put on hold, DW has a steep learning curve. If you must have a WYSWIG editor there's FrontPage -with its faults - or a few of its free clones. But as a free, open source, basic tool for editing CC files such as CCS, JS, PHP and the various templates, you'll go far before you find one as good as PHP Designer (WWW.MPSOFTWARE.ORG). It's worth the effort to learn. Joe
  20. Yes, it means Microsoft Internet Explorer. There are many times I call it something more colorful, also involving only four letters, but I would bet that the forum "bad word" filter would change it to something like snow or snot or sh . .
  21. This one had me crazy. I had no problem installing images in catagories and prodicts - but could not install images onto a Homepage - or even edit the images on the Homepage for a site like www.vikolya.com where I previously had done so with the usual ease. Other Site Docs showed the same problem. My first instinct was to blame the recent upgrade to CC 3.08. Then I got a clue. I discovered I was having the exact same problem installing an image in a WordPress blog that also uses the same FCKeditor on another domain on the same server. That said that the problem was not limited to CC and therefore the cause and solution were not there either. My suspicion turned to the server. But I could not find any cause. I was about to post the issue in an FCKeditor support forum. But first, I needed a nap. A few hours ago I awoke from that nap with the answer fully realized. The problem is the browser. I recently upgraded from Firefox 1.0 to 1.5. The problem began since then. As soon as I opened a CC store in MSIE I had only a momentary delay in editing images on the CC Homepage. And then I had the same success with the blog. Problem solved. I have not fully explored that momentary problem - but it may hold a further clue as to what is going on - and I may even be able to use FF after all. When I used MSI on the first try, I got a message at the top of the browser asking if I wanted to unblock popups from this site. Until I did, the image insertion did not work. As soon as I did, the image editor worked. I'm going to go back to Firefox and see if turning off the popup blocker enables image editing of the Homepage. Apparently, the dialog box for the Site Docs image editor is a popup. Why it is diffferent from the popup in the product or category editor is an interesting question. But at least I now can edit images in any Site Doc.
  22. A radio station here in NYC is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by playing large amounts of his music. Except for the music of Johan Sebastian Bach, I cannot imagine music more conducive to working on CubeCart. The clarity, the precision, the joy . . . wow. So, what are *you* listening to as you work/play with Cube Cart?
  23. Don't panic - it's all fixable and there are many here who will help you. Liike everything else involving a computer, it's not difficult - merely complicated. To be serious, what is the domain name? I'll find out for certain who is the registrar and then guide you through controlling it. Joe
  24. Yep. I'm going to PM you the logins and ask that you take a look.
