When to use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)?

Hey everyone,

I hope that I don't seem real daft when I ask this... especially as this is my first post. I was just setting up PayPal Direct Payments using an API and I wanted to know whether I should be using SSL when using this this?

I was trying to avoid the need to buy a SSL certificate and I thought it was possible to set up a gateway that would accept credit card transactions through the use of PayPal services. But I notice that the form to fill in your credit card details takes place within your site, does that mean I should be using SSL?

I guess my real problem is that I want it so customers don't have to sign up to PayPal to be able to buy anything, yet at the same time I'd like to avoid having to buy a SSL certificate and still be safe. Is this possible?

Thanks for your time.
