3.0.5 'htmlspecialchars' issue

Hi all.

I updated 3.0.4 to 3.0.5 without any problems, but I am noticing something.

In the process of adding in my tweaks to the various files, I noticed that in there was added, in several places, the code:

htmlspecialchars(

with a trailing parenth near the end of the line.

I have since found that my product names that use special characters (such as & # 3 9 ; ) display the code instead of the character. I have been able to confirm that this is the issue, by removing the htmlspecialchars( text, then the codes display the characters (such as ') properly.

I am a php newbie, and am trying to learn what I can. So I was wondering if someone could tell me:

- what that added code is supposed to do, and

- why it works better when I remove it.

Thanks for your help! ;)
