Killer Skin categories header

Hey kids, here's one for you:

My problem is this: I love the Killer skin and it's the one I intend to use. The way things are going, my site is going to have a vast number of categories and sub categories. For this reason (and to give it a nice aesthetic) I have started looking at modifying the top categories header into something like a javascript dropdown menu.

You know the kind I mean. Like this:

Get the idea? Please excuse the wackness of my illustration.

Now, I'm no expert on code so correct me if I'm wrong, but my worry is that due to all the cat IDs being variable, would one have to hard code the whole menu and update it manually if there were changes (i.e. a new category or subcategory)?

One would obviously also have to dispel the creation of subcategory pages until the correct final subcategory was reached, for example:

If I want to buy a set of nice new hydraulic disc brakes for my mountain bike, I'd need to go through the menu thus:

bike parts->brakes->disc->hydraulic

Then I'd arrive at the page with all the different hydraulic disc brakes the store stocked.

Reckon it can be done? Is it a project bigger than me?

This is sort of what I'm after, but not quite. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction though.
