Forgotten Password Redirect

I'm trying to redirect the user to the change password page directly after their password has been reset (instead of just going to the front page). In the lang.inc.php files I've found the code for the email that is sent with the link

To login, please follow the link below:

%s/index.php?act=login

I tried changing that link to include a redirect to the change password page upon login:

%s/index.php?act=login&redir=index.php?act=changePass

but the URL after the base path changes to gibberish. Does anyone know how to accomplish this?
