Guest webicon
Contact your host and ask them for an SSL certificate for your domain - Preferably a wildcard one which will allow you to also work/test off subdomains...There will be an annual charge for this service - but it does allow you to take credit card info on your site so IS essential... kinetic
Ive found that<link edited> to be the best SSL certificate provider cheaper than thawte or verisign at $139 a year for an elite SSL certificate they are professional and will go to great lengths to help you You must have a host that allows you to have your own SSL cert and will give you your own IP theres no substitute for a REAL certificate and soon browsers wont recognize or willthrow a warning from sites using wildcard ssl or other low end certificates do it right get a proper SSL certificate shared SSL is not a good idea because the whole idea is to generate trust in your store and a shared ssl just says you have a host who wont allow it or you didnt want to pay for the extra security a proper SSL cert gives you self signed certificates are also no good they will throw warnings at the customers telling them its a self signed certificate and theres nothing really backing the transaction if the information is leaked Do yourself and your customers a favor get a real cert
Guest Ricco
Try godaddy they give you a Standard (Turbo) SSL for as little as $19.99 a year! You will need someone to install it for you as I find it very tricky to do myself :)
Guest Brivtech
Please respect forum rules regarding the promotion of third party products and services. You may give names or phrases that can be Googled, but direct links are just a no-no here. There are plenty of people who offer SSL security certificates which can be applied to your site, including some of the members here . Look at www.cubecart.org, or cubecartforums.org - They're 2 sites that we are allowed to recommend, and are set up specifically for the purposes of discussing third party items. To answer the original question, SSL is a security encryption that jumbles up all the sensitive information when it's sent through the internet, and re-assembled the other end. It's practically impossible to break without the necessary keys, and is commonly used (and recommended) for transferring secure details such as credit card numbers, or personal information over the internet. You may have encountered this on your web browser, when you see a yellow padlock appear. There's 2 levels of encryption: 128-bit, which is the banking industry standard, and 256-bit, which is I suppose, military strength! I use 256-bit all the time. Something to look out for is that 256-bit isn't always consistent, and may automatically downgrade itself if the browser is incompatible with it (like an older version), without you even knowing. Either way, you are still sending data securely. The reason you have that for the credit card capture module is to ensure the integrity of your customer's card details. Obviously, keeping an eye on access to your server, and using strong passwords is always a wise secondary precaution as well.
