Zend problems on SLES 11

I am trying to install cubecart 4.x on a local SLES 11 server. Everything shows installed properly except ioncube/zend (it's my understanding I only need one of these and maybe I'll try ioncube now). I've scoured these boards, but haven't found a solution that works for me yet, so I am posting a new thread in hopes of having more luck!

CubeCart 4 Requirements Test

Ioncube Loader: Not Available

Zend Optimizer: Not Available

GD Image Library: Version 2.0.34

PHP ≥ 5.1.0: 5.2.6

MySQL ≥ 4.1.0: 5.0.67

Other Information

cURL: Installed

mcrypt: Installed

Safe Mode: Off

I downloaded the Zend Optimizer and placed the ZendOptimizer.so file from the 5_2_x directory into /usr/lib/apache2 with the other so files.

I edited the /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini and added the following line near the end:

zend_extension = "/usr/lib/apache2/ZendOptimizer.so"

there is also a /etc/php5/cli/php.ini file - so I edited that one too when the file in the apache2 directory didn't seem to help.

I've stopped and restarted apache2, but I still get the error that Zend Optimizer is not installed.

Any ideas appreciated!
