Site Variables within the Site Docs textbox

I have a need to place a site variable within an html table that I entered from the sitedocs page.

Example

<table>

<div class="colRight">

{LATEST_NEWS}

</div>

</table>

The only page I can get this code to work on is the global/index.tpl page but then it would display the latest news on all pages. I only need the latest news to be displayed on the homepage. So I edited the homepage from the site docs setting, switched to SOURCE and added the above HTML. When I go to the site's homepage nothing shows up.

Is there a way to use this code on just the homepage?
