Access login info from outside store folder

Hi,

I want to have the "Welcome Username [login/Register]" showing on pages outside of the store. I also want to be able to use this info on my own pages to check if they are logged in.

Cubecart is at http://www.example.com/shop/

I tried adding "echo "USER: ".$_COOKIE['username'];" to a page on the websites home page, but nothing is returned.

Is there some way I can do this?
