Email customers problem - images not working

I've managed to send an email (just sending test one to myself at the moment) when uploading an image or using one already uploaded. However if I link to one or code the html to link to an external image (or one on the same server) it never shows up.

I'm using CC4 4.4.2 and ideally want to link to newsletter images that will be on photobucket or similar - can anyone help or has anyone had the same issue? I can't find anything on the forums, want to use the CC4 rather than campaign monitor etc but at the moment it's useless.
