The Do’s and Dont’s of Search Optimization

Do’s

Include an HTML text link back to the home page of the site in the footer and possibly in the navigation section of each page.

Remove old pages or pages you don’t want indexed from the server. Even though the pages may not be reachable from your site’s navigation, Google and other search engines may have them indexed and they might appear on the search results page.

Search Engine Don’ts

Don’t include meta refresh tags, though this isn't an issue with Google as Google does not recognize meta tags.

Don't use invisible text and avoid overuse of tiny text.

Submit only a limited number of sites in one day to search engines.

Don't submit your site in an inappropriate category.

Don't use link farms. Many search engines consider link farms as spam and will remove a site from the search results for using such a technique. Link to related sites that offer content that would be of interest to your visitors.

Don't repeat a keyword multiple times. Search engines classify this technique as spam, and it can get a page eliminated by a search engine.

Don't include words in the title and meta tags that do not pertain to your Web site’s content. For example, if your Web site is about culinary arts and you include keywords like Kathy Ireland, Jenny McCarthy, etc., not only are you going to attract the wrong audience but you also run the risk of being eliminated by a search engine.
