My usual "duh" question (3.01 upgrade)

Recommended Posts

I suffer from a high degree of literal use of the language. I take words as meaning what they say. I am a perfect example of the folly of assumptions. This causes me no end of problems.

I'm seeing references to 3.01 "upgrade" from 3.00 when, as far as I can determine, there is no such thing. All I can find is a reinstall that involves a complete replacement of 3.00 with 3.01.

Or is it DUH time again? Is there an upgrade file that installs the changes of 3.01 without requiring a compelet reinstall to replace 3.00? If so, it's not on the download page.

Are there upgrade (the emmis?) instructions somewhere that I've missed?

How can I install 3.01 without losing all my work in skinning and settings and TPLs and CSS and so on that I've done in 3.00?

Probably because so many files were altered in the new 3.01 version its a lot easier to upload the whole lot .. so you don't miss any.

Just keep your old "includes/global.inc.php " as it contains your old settings and upload that to its appropiate directory along with the upgrade file (Upload upgrade/scripts/3.0.0-3.0.1/upgrade.php) to the store root directory ... run the upgrade.php and your in business.

:w00t:

EDIT

Sorry .. forgot the bit about the css files etc .. I'll defer to someone else on that. .. but I reckon you could just upload your old skins folder as well ... changes in 3.01 had nothing to do with graphics and layout.... anyone got any ideas.

Anyway .. like I said in another thread .. just back up and try it .. if it stuffs up .. re upload your backups.

Hi,

When you download 3.0.1 and unzip the file you will have two folders, one called upload and one called upgrade.

All the instructions for upgrading are in the upgrade folder.

Hope this helps

Martin

Thank you Martin, but I don't know what you are seeing that I'm not. I downloaded 3.01 and discovered there are NO instructions at all of any kind at all in the upgrade folder. Just three folders of some unexplained purpose and use, each containing only an identically named file "upgrade.php."

Should I try to install all of them? I think not.

So, aside from the fact that I don't know if 3.01 fixes the 3.00 bug that is bugging me the most (the inability to limit the Category display to two columns of centered icon) I think I'll have to pass on "upgrading" to 3.01 - and I am frustrated. I frankly don't know what to do from this point.

There does not appear to be an upgrade tool and whatever has been provided is totally opaque. I cannot do the upgrade - and I have no real reason to do so since I have not encountered any of the bugs 3.01 addresses - and yet I have an online store that I want to get online within the next week. I really like CC but if I can't make it work . . .

I'm going to sleep on this and then decide if I should . . . (don't want to even say it at this point).

Hi,

The upgrade folder should contain 4 text files, these are the upgrade instuctions for different versions, and 1 folder called Scripts. If you open the Scripts folder then you have 3 folders containing upgrade.php.

It sounds like you have either have a corrupt download or the file has not un-zipped correctly.

Would suggest downloading it again.

Hope this helps

Martin

You were right about the corrupted zip - I repeated the download and got the files you indicated.

But I'm still in "literal-minded hell."

The readme for CubeCart v3 3.0.0 to 3.0.1 // UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS starts out with a major assumption:

"a. Upload every file to the server replacing your existing ones excluding: "

What "every file" does that mean? All the files in the zip folder? All the files in the upgrade folder? All the files on my computer including all the encrypted porn I've been saving?

See what I mean by "literal-minded hell" and the dangers of assumptions?

Seriously, the first two are possible meanings but there could be others outside my limited imagination. I firmly believe that software manuals and instructions should NEVER be written by the programmers. They make all kinds of assumptions that a professional writer of instructions would never make.

That's not a reflection of the intelligence or skills of programmers. They are simply not capable of separating what they know from what others do not know. The resulting assumptions permeate and doom their attempts at communication with those of us who do not know what they know.

That's why there are professional technical writers. Writing instructions into something broadly useful is as much a skill as the ability to write code.

I'd really like to have a set of instructions that did not make the assumptions such as the current one does. I doubt I'm the only literal-minded (maybe simple-minded is an even more accurate term) person in the neighborhood who is frustrated by the assumptions in these instructions.

So I'm still stuck on how to proceed - and beginning to wonder if I should.

Brooky - if you are reading this - don't take offense - I love the product - and I know you are pouring everything you have into it every day. You are one hell of a programmer and CC shows it - but you are not a manual or how-to writer.

And if someone here who knows how to make the upgrade could provide more precise step-by-step instructions, I would be genuinely and humbly grateful.

CC is a very "hands on program" .. thats why its free. . you'vr gotta expect a few hassles.

Its hard for anyone to give you "precise" step by step instructions cos we don't know what you've done already to ver 3.00

If you list all the files you have modified .. maybe someone can tell you what or what not to do. i.e which of your old files pertaining to graphics and layout you can upload

I think I've got a slightly better grasp on these things than you .. but I'm sticking with 2.07 .. its a proven work horse . I like 3.00/3.01 but I'm not ready for a serious relationship just yet.

How about this then,

+------------------------------------------------

| 1. Auto Method

+------------------------------------------------

a. Upload every file from the 'upload' folder to your server replacing your existing ones excluding:

includes/global.inc.php

b. Upload upgrade/scripts/3.0.0-3.0.1/upgrade.php to the store root. (store root = 'upload' folder on your server or whatever you have called it)

e. Run the script in your browser. (http://www.your.domain/upload/upgrade.php) where www.your.domain should be replaced with your own domain name and upload is the name of the folder you uploaded all the files to on your server.

f. Delete upgrade.php after upgrade for security reasons.

g. Your store should have been upgraded.

This is assuming you are upgrading from 3 Final to 3.0.1

Hope this helps

Martin
