I have been trying to get my website to redirect directknifesales.com to www.directknifesales. I asked my webhost for help and they made the www.directknifesales.com a subdomain to directknifesales.com. is this the correct way or are they way off? they didn't do anything in the .htaccess file. it does redirect to www not but not sure if its in the correct way. I don't want my main page showing as a sub do I? I am using 5.2.12

Not sure what you mean by "they made it a subdomain to directknifesales.com" as by definition www. of any domain IS a sub-domain !

There are several ways of achieving what you asked for and without knowing what they actually did, it is difficult to comment but if it is working as you requested then it is probably ok although adding two 301 redirect commands to the .htaccess file to do this redirection and also to redirect /index.php to the domain url as well, is the "normal" way to do it and the way we do it for clients

Thanks

I am using seomon a website checker. when you input my domain into it it says

Subdomain www.directknifesales.com î…¤ of

domain 'directknifesales.com' in zone .com

I am thinking the hosting provider did a redirect to the www but didn't use the .htaccess to do it so I am not sure if its good to do it this way or if there is a way to make the www the root .com. I don't see anywhere where they changed anything to the .htaccess file.

Hi

Please read my initial answer above - all www. urls are by definition sub-domains of the domain.

You have now introduced a second domain and a third party "website checker" website (which may or may not be accurate or consistent in what it reports) but you havent yet told us what changes the hosting company made !

I would have said if it is working then dont worry about what they did but a quick look shows it isnt working - if you are choosing and want urls to redirect to the www. version then the following should happen.

http://directknifesales.com, http://directknifesales.com/index.php and http://www.directknifesales.com/index.php should all redirect to http://www.directknifesales.com

And your second domain is doing exactly the same thing so from that point of view, I dont see any difference between them and you should get this sorted as you could be penalised for duplicate content for effectively having 4 urls per website that display exactly the same content.

Thanks

Ian
