This seems the most likely cause if it started happening by itself and then fixed itself as well - you should check with your hosting company as this sort of thing should just never happen. An upgrade / restart of MySQL will cause this service to be down for a very brief moment of time but MySQL copes with this and would not cause this type of issue so the problem was much bigger.
